Entering Advent

Friends, believe it or not, Advent begins in just two days! I wanted to share a few resources with you all as we enter into this holy season.

  • I have compiled all of the blessings I wrote for the monthly Spacious Faith journal pages. You can purchase a PDF of all twelve on my Patreon page. Purchasing the PDF (or having received the PDF with your December journal pages) grants you permission to share these blessings with your community and friends.
  • You might also consider signing up as a Spacious Faith patron as a gift for yourself and/or someone else who might appreciate supporting my work and receiving spiritual journal pages with a blessing each month in the new year. If you would like to pay for a set number of months up front rather than have a monthly payment, please contact me.
  • If you are using my Advent devotional Expecting Emmanuel this season, check out the supplemental material on this blog!
  • For Advent worship planning, don’t forget about the Worship Resource Index. You can search by scripture and look at the Advent section towards the bottom of the index under “The Year.”
  • For this week, here is a sermon based on the Isaiah text for this Sunday’s Revised Common Lectionary Reading.
  • And, of course, there are more resources to come!

In this liminal season, I wish you holy excitement and the deep peace of Christ. Thanks for letting me be a small part of your Advent journey. ~Joanna

This is the Christmas tree at Mall Marina in Vina del Mar, Chile. We just returned from a trip there to see our daughter who is studying abroad this year!

  1. Hi, Joanna,

    I love your stuff!

I hope you remember me from seminary – Tammy Jackson back then.

I am using your Advent Series on the women in the genealogy and have had some folks push back on changing the words to Come Thou Long Expected Jesus

    Question on copyright, etc.

What is the best answer to give? Is it okay due to public domain or something?

    Keep up the great writing!

    Tammy

    • Hi, Tammy. It’s great to hear from you! And I’m so happy to know you are using Expecting Emmanuel this year. In terms of the new words to “Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus”–the tune is in public domain and can be freely used. (The original words are, too.) You have permission from me to use the new lyrics. So there is no copyright issue to worry about. I know some people simply do not like new words to familiar tunes, which I understand.

      • That is what I told them. You are awesome!

Getting some pushback for being so “edgy.” Some people love it, a few walked out ☹

        Thank you.
