Worship Pieces: Holy Spirit

photo

An icon depicting Pentecost–given to Peace Mennonite in memory of Cindy Wiens.

Call to Worship

Come, Holy Spirit,
The wind of God, the breath of Life.
Come, Holy Spirit,
Our Advocate, our Counselor.
Come, Holy Spirit,
Teacher of Wisdom, Reminder of Christ.
Come, Holy Spirit,
Granter of forgiveness, giver of peace.
Come, Holy Spirit.
May we feel God breathing through our worship.
May we receive the Holy Spirit in this place. Amen.

Offertory Prayer

Holy One, you have given yourself to us in Creator, in Christ, in the Spirit. We now give back to you:
this money that seems so little; this worship that seems so small; these words that never quite get it right.
Receive what we offer and transform it by the power of your Spirit into:
enough money, sufficient praise, worthy words
for proclaiming and enacting your peace, justice, and love in the world.

Lenten Offertory Prayer

In preparing for Ash Wednesday and this weekend’s Lenten retreat I haven’t found a lot of time to blog. Thought I would share the offertory prayer we will be using for Lent this year.

God of the Cross, in losing our lives we find them in you. In sharing our money and time, we receive the blessings of your Kingdom. Use these gifts toward your holy work of peace, justice, and service in the world. Amen.

Worship Pieces: Lenten Offertory Prayer and Benediction

What can I say? Wednesday was Ash Wednesday. So the Wednesday Worship Pieces got moved to Friday. And that’s how life goes sometimes.

Both of these pieces will work well with general Lenten themes, I think. So they wouldn’t necessarily have to be used this first week of Lent.

First, an offertory prayer:

God of the wilderness,
We give these offerings in gratitude,
rejoicing in the abundance of your gifts to us.
We give these offerings in faith,
trusting that you will provide for our needs.
We give these offerings in hope,
knowing you can use them to spread your love in this world.
And with these offerings, we give ourselves;
May we live with generous hearts, with open hands. Amen

And last, a benediction:

Whatever wilderness the Spirit has brought you to:
walk in boldness, as a beloved child of God
walk in peace, under the shelter of the Most High
walk in faith, knowing Christ walks with you. Amen.

Wednesday Worship Pieces: Church Celebration

church bigThis Sunday we are celebrating the work of our little church and encouraging people to step forward and serve according to their gifts and passions. Here are some of the worship pieces we will be using:

–One of my favorite calls to worship from Ann B. Day, which you can find here.

–A hymn I wrote with another church member, which is here.

–This prayer of thanksgiving (adapted from an earlier post):

Dear God, giver of life, for each and every part of this church body
We give you thanks.
For those who teach and those who learn. For those who speak and those who listen.
We thank you Jesus, holy teacher.
For those who lead and those who follow. For those working up front and those working in the background.
We give you thanks, O Spirit who enables all work.
For those who share gifts of writing, drawing, sewing, cooking, singing, playing instruments, gardening, and all spirit-filled creative endeavors
We thank you, our Creator God.
For those who share gifts of administration, organization, planning, visioning, coordinating, hospitality, wisdom, discernment, faith, knowledge and all godly attributes necessary to the well being of this body
We give you thanks, O Word of light.
For those who give their time and money; who do what needs done: moving chairs, fixing toilets, caring for children, conducting worship, distributing mail, making phone calls, paying bills,
We thank you, the Giver of all Good things.
For those who share your love and care with others by praying, smiling, hugging, baking, laughing, reaching out and settling in,

We give you thanks, Holy Spirit, our bond of unity.
We thank you for each part of Peace Mennonite church, and we thank you for your power and grace that forms the parts into something more than we could ever be on our own–participants in the Body of Christ.
Amen

–This prayer of confession & assurance of pardon (opening line from 1 Peter 4:10):

Holy One,
We long to be faithful stewards of your abundant grace.

To serve each other in love and humility.
To serve your world with wisdom and energy.

Forgive us when we stumble over pride,
when our words and actions are not guided by love.

Turn our hearts when we act in folly.
Restore our energy when it is gone.

Sometimes, many times, O God, our efforts fail.
But your abundant grace is strong and eternal,
And forgiveness is ours through Jesus Christ.
Thanks be to God.
Amen.

–And this offertory prayer:

God, whose giving knows no ending,
we offer up the treasure that you have entrusted to us;
we offer up the skills and time that you have graciously given to us;
we offer up ourselves in service and praise.
Receive these gifts by your grace.
Multiply and use them through the power of the Holy Spirit
to accomplish Christ’s work of love in the world. Amen.

*As always, you are welcome to use these pieces in your own worship setting. Attribution is appreciated.

Offertory Prayer for Palm Sunday

Holy God, we shout “Hosanna” along with the crowd.
“Save us! We beseech thee.”
And somehow, this chance we have to give our money is a grace of your salvation.
A way to escape the self-focus that threatens to consume our lives.
So open our hearts.
Open our hands.
Accept our gifts, O God, we pray. Amen.

Offertory Prayer for Lent 4B

Holy Christ, you have lifted up your life for our lives. We lift up to you now these fruits of our life’s work; this money that has been given to us, we now give to you. May this offering be used toward healing, toward peace, toward abundant life for all people. Amen.

Worship Pieces for Lent 2

Call to Worship (from Romans 4:13-25)

The promise to Abraham and Sarah and to their descendants came through faith.
The inheritance is based on God’s grace
and is for all of us who are connected through the centuries,
connected to Abraham and Sarah and all their descendants through faith–
Faith in the God who opened Sarah’s womb,
Faith in the God who protected from flood and fire,
Faith in the God who led the people out of Egypt,
Faith in the God who sent angels and prophets,
Faith in the God who became flesh in Jesus.
We claim the inheritance of those who live by faith–
Faith in the God who gives life to the dead
Faith in the God who calls things that don’t exist into existence.
Let us worship with joy.

Offertory Prayer

God of the Cross, in loosing our lives, we find them in you. In sharing our resources, we enter more fully into your kingdom. May these small sacrifices we have made be multiplied and used for your glory to enact your Good News. Amen.

Wednesday Worship Piece

Here is the offertory prayer we are using during Advent each year.  I just change out the “candle” words from week to week–God of Hope, God of Peace, God of Joy, God of Love. I pray you are all having a blessed Advent so far.

God of Peace, in this season of Advent, this time of waiting, we offer to you our money, our time, our energy. Accept what we offer. And use these offerings to shine the light of your peace in the dark places of our world. Amen.

Wednesday Worship Pieces: For Easter

I do not have our Sunday worship service completely planned yet, though I’m getting close.  I offer some worship pieces below that may or may not be used at Peace Mennonite Church this coming Sunday.  I pray you are each having a blessed Holy Week.

Call to Worship

Christ is Risen!
Christ is Risen Indeed!
Hallelujah!
On this day we celebrate resurrection.
The power of life has overcome the power of death.
Hallelujah!
The light of love has shattered the darkness of fear.
Hallelujah!
The way of peace has prevailed against the violence of empire.
Hallelujah!
We come to worship the God whose resurrection power lives on in the Christ we serve.
Hallelujah!

Offertory Prayer

God of Resurrection, may these gifts we have given be used to bring renewed life in our world:
Hope to the despairing; joy to the depressed; peace to the dismayed; love to all of your children, everywhere.
We give this offering to you in the name of your Son, the Resurrected One, Jesus. Amen.

Benediction

As Christ burst forth from the tomb, may new life burst forth from us and show itself in acts of love and healing to a hurting world. And may the same Christ, who lives forever and is the source of our new life, keep your hearts rejoicing and grant you peace this day and always. Amen.

Wednesday Worship Pieces

This call to worship is based on a piece from Seekers Church.  Their site contains many beautiful liturgies–it’s one of my go-to resources.  The offertory prayer is one I wrote awhile back.  As always, feel free to borrow/adapt these for your own use.

Call to Worship:
In the presence of our Creator, who called the universe into being,
We stand in awe.
In the presence of our Redeemer, who emptied himself that our lives might be full,
We stand in need.
In the presence of our Sustainer, who infuses each breath, each movement, with holy life,
We stand with open hearts.
In your presence, Diving Mystery, we come to worship,
Open to your truth, your love, your healing.

Offertory Prayer

God of abundance, accept the gifts we give this morning.
Accept our gifts of praise–

Our voices raised in song and prayer.
Accept our gifts of time and talent–
Our lives lived to further your reign of peace and justice.
Accept our gifts of money–
For all that we have, O most gracious God, comes from you.
Amen.
